Trivial information can be fun, but it can also be helpful. A few eye facts, myths and truths are fun to discuss. The list below touches on eye facts you may have heard over the years and sets the record straight on myths and truths.

Myth: If you cross your eyes, they will stick.
Truth: While it might not be the best way to get positive attention, crossing your eyes will not make them stick. The bad habit might though it you do it often, so consider how it looks before you get into the habit of eye crossing as a means for conveying a message with body language.

Myth: If parents have poor eyesight, their kids will have poor eyesight.
Truth: This can be true in some cases. Genetics do play a role in eye health and sight, so yes; parents who wore glasses or had other vision issues as a child very well may pass these traits on. Early visits to eye care specialist will help detect any special eye issues a child may have. Family visual history will help your vision care specialist know signs to look for.

Myth: Sitting too close to the television is bad for your eyes.
Truth: This statement came out with the new fangled television set and somehow has never died out. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) says “ kids can actually focus up close without eyestrain better than adults, so they often develop the habit of sitting right in front of the television or holding reading material close to their eyes.” Still if you and your children are sitting comfortably across the room from the television set and one of your children complains of not being able to see and always moves closer to the set, they may have a vision issue that needs to be diagnosed.

Myth: Eat your carrots, they are good for your eyes, you have never seen a rabbit wearing eye glasses have you.
Truth: Carrots are good for your eyes, but any foods rich in vitamin A are also good for you. Asparagus, apricots, milk, eggs, and others foods are also on the list of eye healthy vitamin A rich foods. As for that rabbit with eye glasses, only one. Bunny Rabbit the lovable puppet on the childhood show Captain Kangaroo wore glasses.

Myth: Computers can damage your eyes
Truth: Again sought out the AAO with that question and the answered was clearly, no. Individuals were studied using the computer and it is noted that like reading, you are less likely to blink while on the computer. This can make eyes dry, which may lead to a feeling of fatigue or eyestrain. It is a good idea to stop your work and take a break, look up from the screen and close your eyes from time to time to keep your eyes from drying out. For children, encourage breaks when web browsing or playing video games. This is a good idea when reading or studying books for long periods of time as well.

Myth: Only boys are color blind.
Truth: Estimates show that up to 8% of boys have some degree of color blindness, but girls are not totally in the clear. Less than1% of girls have some form of color blindness, very rare, it is does occur.

Eye facts are fun, and one fact that is always true, you need regular eye examinations to maintain good eye sight and eye health. Take time today to schedule an appointment with your eye care profession and keep your vision, crystal clear.

1.	Choose to each food rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
2.	Supplement your antioxidant levels by taking nutritional supplements.
3.	Eliminate harmful foods and lifestyle choices.
4.	Do eye exercises.
Is it possible to safe guard your eyes from diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration? Yes it is. Here are some tips.
We have all heard you are what you eat. Your eyes are what you eat as well. A study of the eyes shows that many of the vitamins and minerals found in our bodies is also found in our eyes, but in a much higher concentration. The food you choose today will impact your over all health, but it will also impact the health of your eyes. A diet with poor nutritional support can lead to eye or vision health issues as you age.
Your eyes need rest. Make a point to give your eyes time to rest and avoid straining your eyes. If your eyes hurt or feel strained, stop what you are doing and allow your eyes time to rest. Check with your eye care specialist if you have any vision changes, or feel any pain in your eyes after an eye strain.
Common everyday tips for keeping your eyes in top form. Wear protective eye wear when using power tools or mowing the lawn. Wear sunglasses when out side, even in the winter months, sunglasses aren’t just for the beach.
Use good lighting when reading books or other printed materials. Many of us are online for hours at a time for both work and entertainment. Make sure to adjust your computer screen to make the words on the screen easy to read. There are two methods for increasing your print size. If you have a mouse with a roller wheel that scrolls up and down the page, use this version. When you are on a page and need to change the print size, press down and hold the “Ctrl” button while you scroll the mouse down the page. Each time the wheel clicks, the text size will increase. Stop when the print is at the point where you can comfortably read. To return the print to normal size, just hold the “Ctrl” and move the mouse back up, print will downsize and stop when back to normal.

If you do not have a mouse with a roller, use this method. Open your web browser. Click on the “view” in the upper left hand corner. Now select the text size and then select larger or largest. To return back to normal, repeat but choose medium or small. For Netscape or Mozilla browsers, you will need to press the “Ctrl” key simultaneously with the + or – symbols to change text size.

Close your eyes

Close your eyes for a few minutes and try to go about your day without sight. Difficult isn’t it? Now think you value your sight and when you valule something, you protect it. The best way to protect your sight is to have regular eye exams. There are some standard procedures you can expect at a standard eye exam.
·	A review of your personal and family health history and any history of eye issues.
·	Using an eye chart your eyes will be evaluated for both near and far vision
·	Near vision test determine if you have presbyopia and need bifocals or progressive lenses.
·	You will be evaluated for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.
·	An eye pressure test and examination of the optic nerve to check for glaucoma.
·	An interior examination of the eyes to rule out other eye problems like cataracts, or macular degeneration.

How often you should have you eyes checked is another consideration. Eye care experts recommend that adults have a complete eye examination once every one to three years. Things to take into consideration about time between exams are: age and risk factors for eye issues, and if you currently wear corrective lenses. Seek eye care more often if you already wear corrective eye wear.

It is important for children to have routine eye exams as well. A few guide lines for children and eye care health are:

·	Have their first eye exam by six month of age if there are no issues, a second eye exam by age three. Children need a second eye exam at age three.
·	Have an eye exam before starting school. This is critical as 80 percent of information children receive in the classroom is through visual means.
·	For risk-free children who do not wear corrective lenses, should have an eye exam every two years until they are 18.

There are some children who have higher risk factors for vision problems and may need corrective lenses even earlier than six month, or may need more frequent eye exam throughout their childhood.

·	Children with a history of premature birth and or low birth weight.
·	Developmental delays
·	Eyes that are turned or crossed
·	Family history of eye disease
·	History of Mother with infection while expecting the child.
·	Any child with corrective lens needs a yearly eye exam

Nothing is as precious as the gift of vision. Protect your eye and keep them healthy with regular eye examinations.

Your eyes, nothing is more important to your quality of life than caring for your eyes. In our busy days so often we just don’t have enough hours in a day to do all we need to, and we let little things slip. Don’t let caring for your eyes be one of the little things, it can turn into a big issue if you fail to keep your eyes healthy.

Some of the reasons eye examinations are so critical is:

Exams monitor vision. We all are subject to vision change as we age; a good eye exam will help to keep our vision in check.

Check for eye disease. You may not see or feel anything wrong, but eye disease can silently be robbing you of eye sight. Early detection means correcting or heading off possible eye sight loss.

You eyes are mirrors to you body. Eyes can help detect health issue in other parts of your body. Your eye doctor can alert you to issues that may need the intervention of your main medical provider.

Failure to monitor these issues with a yearly eye exam can result in diminished eye health, vital warning signs about other health issues being over looked, and possibly lead to eye sight loss.

To save sight and keep your eyes healthy, a visit to an eye clinic for a check up is advised. When you get an eye check up, the things your vision specialist will look for are:

Refraction of the eye. This shows if there is an issue with being nearsighted, farsighted, or astigmatic. These issues are corrected by prescribing eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Strabismus, or the alignment of the eye will be checked. If the eyes are working together properly, you have no issue. If not, eye treatments will correct they alignment of the eye.

Two critical diseases of the eye that will be checked for are glaucoma and diabetic eye disease.

Checking the eye’s blood vessels or retina, overall health condition of the eye will be checked.

Taking care of your eyes is not just about knowing if you need glasses of not, it is about protecting your vision. Proper eye care is essential for your health and well being. Knowing your eyes are healthy and working properly gives you peace of mind as you know you have done what is best to care for you sight.
